DIGITAL ART BY ILUMINADA GARCÍA-TORRES BRINGS ALICANTE’S HOTEL AMERIGO TO LIFE

A disciple of Antonio López, the painter from Elche is currently working on her series "ARIADNE'S THREAD" while incorporating new digital techniques into what has become the printmaking of the 21st century.
Visual artist ILUMINADA GARCÍA-TORRES (born 1949 in Elche, Alicante, Spain) has spent twelve years researching a pictorial series titled Ariadne's Thread. She was the designer selected to provide the ornamentation for the Hotel Amerigo in Alicante—a five-star hotel in the heart of the city—featuring a hundred of her works. The hotel is already open to the public and will be officially inaugurated in February. This collection of large-format digital pieces on canvas, characterized by great geometric and chromatic beauty, is known as the AMERIGO COLLECTION—a unique and singular project that is gaining significant recognition within the art circuit.
ILUMINADA GARCÍA-TORRES studied at the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid. She was a disciple of Antonio López in 1965 and Eusebio Sempere in 1969. Her accolades include the Ibérico 2000 award, consistent selection in the L'Oréal painting competition, and an invitation as a guest artist to exhibit at Gasworks Studios in London, among others. Three years ago, she completed a striking Normative Art sculpture in bronze and stainless steel for a public space in her hometown of Elche.
Though she began in realistic and metaphysical figuration, Iluminada García-Torres eventually shifted toward a geometric and combinatory color art which she termed Combinables, Continuous Spatial Tracing, and Ariadne's Thread. This transition marked both an end and a beginning after she painted the classical sculpture of Ariadne located in the glass rotunda of the Prado Museum. This series, drawn and executed with extreme rigor, gives rise to infinite combinatory possibilities, which the author has meticulously documented in registered notebooks.
"Following my encounter with the sculpture of 'Sleeping Ariadne' at the Prado Museum, and through the oil paintings I created there of the marble figure, I became aware of its harmony—an alchemy of power and subtlety that impressed me and sparked a very special fascination. Through the contemplation of that sculpture, I understood that Ariadne's harmony invokes a geometric and mathematical cosmos; this became the origin and inspiration for the combinatory poetics of the artistic path I began in 1991," she states.
The lines traced by ILUMINADA GARCÍA-TORRES are executed dynamically in a single gesture. They maintain a sense of proportionality within the square, governed by a mathematical and geometric relationship of time and light. The result is breathtaking.
DIGITAL STAGE
After working with pigment painting, the author inaugurated her new digital stage and fully immersed herself in experimenting with new technologies. The result is an innovative, rigorous, and coherent language in which, despite the shift, the thorough evolution of her work can be appreciated. Her work features a "continuous spatial tracing" that connects with the work of normative artists—true conceptualists—among them the late Eusebio Sempere, also from Alicante. It could be said without risk that ILUMINADA GARCÍA-TORRES is among the worthy successors of the great Sempere, who left his work and collection to a museum in Alicante.
Throughout 2003, ILUMINADA GARCÍA-TORRES worked feverishly and exclusively on the Amerigo Collection for the hotel of the same name, which was set to see the light in 2004. "It is a series within the series called Ariadne's Thread, which I began in 1991," the artist explained to Elsemanaldigital.com. "It consists of one hundred digital geometries printed on 90 x 180 cm canvases, in which I interpret the free and poetic reading of this stage as the visual construction of utopia through—the energy of each moment—the combinatory unit of light-time-space-line."
Hotel Amerigo takes its name from the passage that for 150 years connected the streets Mayor and Rafael Altamira in Alicante. José Gabriel Amerigo was a restless local who, born in 1807, traveled to the Americas to seek his fortune, achieving success during his time in the United States.
Using part of her digital geometric work, she presented the Collection for Hotel Amerigo. ILUMINADA GARCÍA-TORRES held an exhibition in December 2003 in Alicante titled "ARIADNE'S THREAD-COMBINATORICS." Joaquín Santos Matas, director of the Juan Gil-Albert Institute of Culture in Alicante, wrote in the catalog: "Digital printing is the technique chosen by ILUMINADA GARCÍA-TORRES. The results of her geometries on large-format canvases are surprising in this renewed version of printmaking for the third millennium."
ILUMINADA GARCÍA-TORRES is one of the most highly valued Valencian artists. After her time in Madrid and London, she decided to return to her homeland, where she finds the best light to breathe life into the vibrant chromaticism of her pictorial and digital work.

ARTE DIGITAL DE ILUMINADA GARCÍA-TORRES DA VIDA AL HOTEL AMERIGO DE ALICANTE

Discípula de Antonio López, la pintora ilicitana trabaja en su serie "EL HILO DE ARIADNA", al tiempo que incorpora nuevas técnicas digitales para lo que es ya el grabado del siglo XXI.
La artista visual ILUMINADA GARCÍA-TORRES (1949 Elche, Alicante. España), que lleva doce años investigando en una serie pictórica denominada El Hilo de Ariadna, fue la diseñadora seleccionada para llevar a cabo, con un centenar de obras, la ornamentación del Hotel Amerigo en Alicante, un cinco estrellas en medio de la ciudad, abierto al público y que será inaugurado oficialmente en el mes de febrero. Al conjunto de piezas digitales sobre lienzo de gran formato, de gran belleza geométrica y cromática, se le conoce por COLECCIÓN AMERIGO, un proyecto único y singular que está siendo muy comentado y valorado en el circuito artístico.
ILUMINADA GARCÍA-TORRES estudió en la Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando (Madrid) y fue discípula de Antonio López en 1965 y de Eusebio Sempere en 1969. Entre los galardones recibidos destaca el de Ibérico 2000, la selección continuada en el concurso de pintura de L´Oreal, ser artista invitada para exponer en Gasworks Studios (Londres), etc. Hace tres años llevó a cabo una rotunda escultura Normativa en bronce y acero inoxidable, para un espacio público en Elche, su ciudad natal.
En sus comienzos trabajó la figuración realista y metafísica, pero ILUMINADA GARCÍA-TORRES se decantó hacia un arte geométrico y combinatorio de color que denominó Combinables, Trazado Espacial continuo, El hilo de Ariadna. Era el punto final y de arranque tras pintar la escultura clásica de Ariadna, que se encuentra en la rotonda de cristales del Museo del Prado. La serie dibujada y trabajada con sumo rigor da lugar a infinitas posibilidades combinatorias, que la autora ha recogido en cuadernos cuidadosamente registrados.
"A raíz de mi encuentro con la escultura de "Ariadna dormida" en el Museo del Prado, y a través de los cuadros al óleo que allí pinté de la escultura de mármol, obtuve conciencia de su armonía, alquimia de potencia y sutileza que me impresionó provocándome una fascinación muy especial. Comprendí con la contemplación de la escultura, que la armonía de "Ariadna" invoca un cosmos geométrico y matemático que es el origen e inspiración de la poética combinatoria del camino artístico que inicié en 1991", afirma.
Las líneas que ILUMINADA GARCÍA-TORRES traza están realizadas de modo dinámico, con un solo gesto, mantienen una proporcionalidad en el espacio del cuadrado, en una relación matemática y geométrica, de tiempo y luz. El resultado es asombroso.
ETAPA DIGITAL
Después de la pintura de pigmento, la autora inauguró su nueva etapa digital y entró de lleno en la experimentación de las nuevas tecnologías. El resultado es un lenguaje innovador, riguroso y coherente en el que, pese al quiebro dado, puede apreciarse la evolución cabal de su obra. En su trabajo hay un "trazado espacial continuo" que conecta con la obra de los artistas normativos, verdaderos conceptuales, entre ellos, el desaparecido, también alicantino, Eusebio Sempere. Podría decirse sin riesgo que ILUMINADA GARCÍA-TORRES se encuentra entre las dignas sucesoras del gran Sempere, que dejó su obra y colección para un museo en Alicante.
En el 2003 ILUMINADA GARCÍA-TORRES trabajó de manera febril y exclusiva en la colección Amerigo para el Hotel que lleva ese nombre, que habría de ver la luz en el 2004. "Es una serie dentro de la serie, denominada El hilo de Ariadna, que inicié en 1991", explica la artista para Elsemanaldigital.com. "Se trata de cien geometrías digitales impresas sobre lienzo de 90 x 180 cm en las que interpreto la lectura libre y poética de esta etapa, como la construcción visual de la utopía mediante —la energía de cada instante— la unidad combinatoria luz-tiempo-espacio-línea".
El Hotel Amerigo toma su nombre del pasaje que durante ciento cincuenta años uniera las calles Mayor y Rafael Altamira de Alicante. José Gabriel Amerigo fue un alicantino inquieto que, nacido en 1807, marchó a las Américas para hacer fortuna, algo que consiguió a su paso por los Estados Unidos.
Con parte del trabajo de arte geométrico digital presentó la Colección para el Hotel Amerigo, ILUMINADA GARCÍA-TORRES hizo una exposición en diciembre de 2003 en Alicante "EL HILO DE ARIADNA-COMBINATORIA", y Joaquín Santos Matas, director del Instituto Alicantino de Cultura Juan Gil-Albert, escribió en el catálogo: "La estampación digital es la técnica elegida por ILUMINADA GARCÍA-TORRES. Los resultados de sus geometrías en lienzos de gran formato son sorprendentes en esta renovada versión del grabado en el tercer milenio".
ILUMINADA GARCÍA-TORRES es una de las artistas valencianas más cotizadas, quien después de su paso por Madrid y Londres ha decidido reintegrarse a su tierra, donde encuentra la mejor luz para insuflar en el alegre cromatismo de su obra pictórica y digital.
