P. 9/5/2000 Starting today, the Elche Municipal Exhibition Center presents the exhibition CONTINUOUS SPATIAL TRACING - ARIADNE’S THREAD by ILUMINADA GARCIA TORRES (Elche, 1949), featuring the work of one of the artists least known by her fellow citizens. After several years in Madrid and London, she returns to her birthplace to showcase her artistic evolution following the painting of two canvases ten years ago the "Sleeping Ariadne" sculpture at the Prado Museum as a model for her paintings. Since then, her work has moved away from figures and realism to delve into the world of geometric abstraction.
The fascination that the sculpture of Ariadne still holds for Iluminada García Torres led her to embark on a path seeking simplification and essentiality, reaching its highest degree: the point and the line. "Each stroke is unique and different from the others because it corresponds to a single moment," she explains. From this arises one of the core concepts of her painting: line-space-time.
Her work arrives in Elche after being exhibited in London in January, which the artist described as "a frankly interesting experience." The evolution of her work can be observed through 17 silkscreen prints, 13 geometric abstract works, six figurative paintings, and five other abstracts presented at the Municipal Exhibition Center of ELX-ELCHE from May 5 to 31, 2000. P. 9/5/2000 EL Centro Municipal de Exposiciones de Elche presenta desde hoy la exposición TRAZADO ESPACIAL CONTINUO - HILO DE ARIADNA de ILUMINADA GARCIA TORRES (Elche 1949) obra de una de las artistas más desconocidas por sus conciudadanos. Tras varios años en Madrid y en Londres, regresa a la ciudad que la vio nacer para mostrar su evolución artística a raíz de pintar dos lienzos hace ya 10 años de la escultura de "Ariadna dormida" en el Museo del Prado como modelo de sus pinturas. Desde entonces, su obra se ha alejado de la figura y el realismo para adentrarse en el mundo de la abstracción geométrica.
La fascinación que todavía produce la escultura de Ariadna en Iluminada García Torres le llevó a emprender un camino en busca de la simplificación y la esencialidad que ha llevado a su grado máximo: el punto y la línea. «Cada trazo es singular y diferente a los demás porque corresponde a un solo momento», explica. De ahí nace uno de los conceptos de su pintura línea-espacio-tiempo.
Su obra llega a Elche después de haber expuesto en Londres en enero lo que la artista calificó como «una experiencia francamente interesante». La evolución de su trabajo se puede observar a través de 17 serigrafías, 13 obras geométrico abstractas, seis cuadros figurativos y otros cinco abstractos que se presentan en el Centro Municipal de Exposiciones de ELX-ELCHE del 5 al 31 de Mayo, 2000.
